Topographical Allegories

The majority of my topographical work is the result of exploring the cities as well as the suburbs around me. The lines between what was once considered urban and suburban are now blurred with cities starting to adopt the suburban aesthetic which is expansive, repetitive and banal. Much of this change in landscape is attributable to practicality as these structures and cheap and fast to build. Some have individual touches adorning them however most are similar in design and function without a hint of individuality. This clearly reflects our social values of function over form, frugality and disposable culture which has created a sense of placelessness and lack of individuality / pride in our environment(s). Almost everything, everywhere looks the same. It doesn’t matter if you are in Arkansas, Saskatchewan or even suburban Mexico, businesses and communities are interchangeable and these landscapes have an air of anonymity and rootlessness to them.
